Description

The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel by American author, F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is set in 1922 and follows the life and times of a man named Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, and his neighbor, Nick Carraway. The book explores themes of decadence, idealism, social upheaval, and excess.

Nick is a pretty passive character and he isn’t involved in the plot much, but he has a view on everything that’s going on around him. The plot revolves around Jay Gatsby’s obsessive love for the beautiful Daisy Buchanan.

The pivotal scene of the novel, which is described in Chapter 5, occurs when Gatsby achieves his dream of reuniting with Daisy. Nick, who is a bystander throughout the scene, sees Gatsby’s obsessive love for Daisy and the tragedy that it brings. Gatsby and Daisy kiss and Nick describes that “it was as if he had been waiting for just that moment.”

When Nick accompanies Daisy to meet with Gatsby again after a long time, on their way to Gatsby’s house, Nick utters the phrase “the exhilarating ripple of her voice was a wild tonic in the rain” upon hearing Daisy’s voice when she descends from her car.

An excerpt of Chapter 5 which depicts the scene and contains the quoted passage is printed, together with the book’s iconic cover, on this practical, high-quality tote bag available in three sizes.
