The term “proem” often overlaps with what later literature calls a preface or preamble. In medieval and Renaissance works, a proem frequently took the form of an allegorical frame or moral reflection that prepared the audience for what lay ahead. For example, Geoffrey Chaucer’s Parliament of Fowls (circa 1380s) opens with a proem that meditates on the nature of love before the poem transitions into a dream vision. Here, the proem functions less as an invocation than as a thematic staging. Modern Uses of Proem

Although the classical proem belonged to epic poetry and oratory, modern writers have revived the form in diverse ways. Ezra Pound, in The Cantos (1917–1969), uses an opening canto often described as a proem, stitching fragments of translation and myth to announce the poem’s ambition. Contemporary scholars also use the word “proem” to describe the initial section of philosophical treatises or extended essays when these openings carry a deliberate stylistic and structural charge. The persistence of the term signals its continued value for works that seek to mark a deliberate threshold between silence and speech.
